Supportive Coaching – The Foundation of Coaching - Part 1 Coaching is defined by Wikipedia as, “a form of development in which a person called a coach supports a learner or client in achieving a specific personal or professional goal by providing training and guidance.” In this definition and in many articles written about coaching, the word support is frequently mentioned. Supporting teachers is the basic foundation to coaching as it builds a culture of trust and respect. When teachers are supported, they feel appreciated and valued and are inspired to do their best. In creating a SAGE Coaching Framework while pursuing a Graduate Instructional Coaching certificate, I was compelled to include support as the first element of this coaching framework because without support we cannot have the partnership and trust with our coachees. So, what does support look like in a coaching role? In this blog, I will highlight the ways that I have supported teachers during my first year two years as a coach. Of course, learning to master the ways I support teachers is an ongoing goal, but it is my hope that these initial ideas will be helpful to you in your role and journey as a coach. |
