students
During my years as a full-time teacher, my students wrote notes and gave me cards often. I kept all of these notes and cards in an envelope for a long time, and when my wife and I started dating (we taught at the same school in NC), I realized she did the very same. After we got married, I scrapbooked all the notes from our students. Below, you will find a few of the many notes my students gave me as well as a picture of some of the MANY notes my wife received. One of the notes that I included from my students states, "Dear Ms. Gildharry, Even though we don't get along with each other.." I included this note here because as a teacher, my students and I did not have to see eye to eye for me to make sure that I did whatever it took to get them a good education. Sometimes this meant being firm and never giving up on them, even when they got frustrated and did.
I encourage you to keep the notes that your students give you and read them as often as you need to. My wife and I go down memory lane a lot.

Dear Ms. Gildharry ,
Even though we don't get along with each other, I would like to recognize you for the things you do for me. We may catch attitudes with each other, but I want to let you know that I am very appreciative for the things you taught me. You taught me so much in so little time. So I would like to say Thank You from the bottom of my heart. |
Dear Ms. Gildharry,
You are a great teacher... seriously....even though you push me to talk more and get me mad sometimes, I still learned a lot from you. I know that you believe in me and know that I can do it if I try. You got me back on track when I started messing around and look at me now. I am getting better grades. You are one of those teachers that taught me a lesson and I actually still learn for me. Thanks so much for doing everything you do. Thank You. You are a great teacher! |
Notes for my Wife from her High School Students in Charlotte, NC
These notes were addressed to my wife in her maiden name: Lewis. If I included all the notes she received, my website will just be filled with only these notes. :). My wife was an amazing Chemistry teacher; she went above and beyond for her students. One of her students thanked her for understanding their learning styles. Wow! This a pedagogical shift that is so profound and one that we are still working hard to implement in education, she did it in her 1st year.
I am so proud of the teacher my wife was and even more proud of her for working hard to achieve her goals and dreams. She is now a Curriculum Manager with Farm Credit Bank of Texas where she uses her talents and extensive knowledge to design curriculum for bank employees.

Dear Ms. Lewis,
I truly appreciate all that you have done for my classmates and me. Chemistry has been a real challenge for me and with your patience and help I have been motivated to do my best. Even though it seems sometimes that none of us care, we do and it is very important to us to make you proud. Many students take for granted teachers like you that really give 110%. I am truly grateful for you. You are an awesome, cool teacher and any school would be lucky to have you teaching. |
Dear Ms. Lewis,
I would like to say thank you for helping me out through Chemistry. Chemistry was the most challenging course that I have ever taken in life, but thanks to you for being so patient with me. I believe that I was able to grow. I really appreciate you so much. Thank you! |
Dear Ms. Lewis,
I never really took the time out to say Thank You. You have eased the pain of learning Chemistry through your wacky games and bribes with food. I must admit that at the beginning of the year I was lost-completely, totally! But since after you learned my/our learning style, I have improved. You really have done everything possible to get us to comprehend the overwhelming amount of information. So many other teachers would have deserted us to let us fail, but you stood around through it all. Thank you Ms. Lewis for everything. You are an amazing teacher. |
Notes from My ELL Students
I am still scrapbooking the tons of notes my ELL students gave to during my time as their teacher and just before I left. From the day I became a teacher, I put my heart and soul into it all, but when I started teaching these kiddos, I gave them even more and had the most growth as a teacher. We had lots of fun, laughter, challenges, tears, but very importantly, lots of growth. I am so proud of them and their dedication to building Weebly websites to represent their learning in math. They taught me so much during this process. Many of them were often my assistant teachers.
Notes from My Secondary School Students in Trinidad and Tobago
In my move from Trinidad and Tobago to the U.S., I lost some of the items my students in Trinidad and Tobago gave me, but these cards stayed with me. When you believe in your students and push them to reach their fullest potential, they see you as "The Best Math Teacher In The World" and a mother to them.
I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend Naparima Girls' High School, a very prestigious high school in the city where I had some of the most dedicated and caring teachers. When I graduated from college, I went back to teach in the village/small town I grew up in to help my students believe in themselves and their abilities, and make their dreams come true. I spent 14 years there before moving to the U.S. to accept a teaching job in North Carolina.
